Laura Gunderson/Retail & Consumer Affairs Reporter/The Oregonian
|
I've reported for The Oregonian for nearly a decade, covering nearly every beat in every outpost, from inner-city high-school sports to politics in suburbia. I came downtown to cover retail for our Business team in 2005, creating a shopping blog and writing stories on retail trends occuring here
and nationwide, along with any local breaking-news stories. This year I've worked to bring more consumer affairs reporting to the beat, adding our regular Complaint Desk feature on Sundays, which as it touts, offers help for frustrated consumers. When my fingers aren't on the keyboard, they're usually equally busy attempting to change the diaper or stuff food into theface of my particulary active -- at least it seems that way -- 1-year-old. |

In 2006, she began the journey of starting a business, and in January 2007 opened souk. souk offers hourly, daily and monthly work and meeting space for indie workers. The growing trend of the post-geographic worker, fueled by technology, and by our generation’s tendency to place a premium on self-direction and work-life balance, provided a basis for the business. Equally inspired by Portland’s strong community spirit and creative class, she sought to create a business that would be an unique community additive. Mark Hayes/ CEO of Flowerbud .com
|
Mark Hayes… walks, talks, eats, sleeps and once upon a time even grew flowers. Now if only he could sell the darn things!! Founder/ CEO of Flowerbud .com, an “original” Portland dotcom that despite, drought, pestilence and late frost bloomed rather than burst with the bubble. Mark comes reluctantly to the internet and ecomm from the most unlikely of places…the yellow seats of green tractors on his various farms as close as Sauvie Island and as far flung as Southern Africa. Now too old or perhaps too wise to actively farm, the daily puzzle is of how to repeatedly engage a huge and sometimes unknown public in the act of buying flowers directly from farms he selects throughout the Americas, using little other than the internet and native wit. The internet remains a medium that both attracts and repels him as it involves strategies that evolve about as quickly as fresh tulips drink water. No longer is there an “off season” for him. In trading in the “agrarian myth” for around the clock , around the world commerce he muses that he has single handedly enriched Delta airlines, FedEx, Google and Peet’s Coffee to name a few. For the sake of sanity and something easy to do he raises two teenage boys and rides a bike close to 5000 miles a year. |
